You know my name but not my story .

On the 9th of October, all the first year marketing students were invited to a workshop hosted by Brett “fish” to guide us through the story telling side of marketing and how it relates to communicating effectively with stories. He started of the workshop by explaining his business and what he does.

He started off the activities by letting us watch a video of two men who came together through their stories, he then proceeded to ask us to get into group of 5 with people we hardly know but are in our class. We had to go around the group and state something about ourselves that we know the other group members wouldn’t know, I stated that I tend to procrastinate a lot and one of my group members said that she hates cheese. After that was completed, Brett the n told us to go around and say one lie about ourselves. I found this quite interesting due to the members in your group not knowing if you’re lying or not.

Web then had to take out an object that meant something to us and that we wouldn’t cope without , my item was my camera which was a bit too risky to bring out for nothing , we had to go around the group and explain what the object meant to us and why it is so important in our lives  . I said that my camera is important to me due to it being my passion and me feeling lost and basic without it. One of the other4 members in my group had brought a ring that she had received from a past relationship and said that she keeps it with her to remember the good memories which I found very sweet.

The most effective part of the workshop was drawing our life river; the river had to consist of trials and tribulations that we’ve been through, one event in South Africa that affected our lives and a significant other.

After we had drawn our rivers and included all the specifications, we had to explain our rivers vaguely. I found this activity the most personal and intimate because it was you explaining your hardships of your life to stingers  and this definitely changed my perspective of the people in my class , one of the members in my group found it hard to explain her river because she has been through so much in life and become very emotionally when trying the explain herself , I found this very interesting how this activity allowed us to become vulnerable to others we hardly know but see on a daily basis b.

I really enjoyed this work shop because I am a very emotional person and very in touch with my feelings so this workshop was very easy for me to relate to. I honestly feel like us as a class should do these types of workshops more often to get to know each h other better and to gain a better understanding of the next person due to some of us being with each for the next two years and being constantly involved in group assignments and so forth .

Creating relationships within our marketing class won’t only benefit us now but will be very beneficial after our studies seeing that most of us will be in the marketing industry in some way and i feel like we’re not taking advantage of having the ability to network now already with those in our class because you never know when you might need that person & when they might need you. , not saying that you should become friends with everyone but at least be open to the possibility .
